The main event of this week’s “AEW Dynamite” from El Paso, Texas, carried all the emotion of a homecoming story. Thunder Rosa, fighting in front of her home state crowd, challenged Thekla for the AEW Women’s World Championship in a hard-hitting contest that had the University of El Paso arena on its feet.
Despite the passionate support for the challenger, the champion’s calculated offense proved to be the deciding factor. In the end, Thekla walked out of Texas with her title still firmly in her grasp, but the story is far from over.
A Battle of Pride and Vengeance
The animosity between these two women has been simmering for weeks. It all started when Thunder Rosa stepped up to defend the honor of the injured former champion, Kris Statlander, who was brutally taken out by Thekla’s faction, the Triangle of Madness (alongside Julia Hart and Skye Blue).
On the February 18 episode of “Dynamite,” Rosa called out Thekla directly, demanding a match and vowing to make the champion pay for her actions. Thekla, fresh off her own title victory over Statlander in a brutal Strap Match, accepted the challenge, setting the stage for this high-stakes showdown in Rosa’s home territory.
What made this match particularly intriguing was the explicit promise of non-interference. For one night only, the playing field was leveled: Julia Hart and Skye Blue were barred from ringside. On Rosa’s side, Statlander—still recovering from her injuries—remained in the back, respecting the one-on-one nature of the contest.
The Match: A Back-and-Forth War
The opening bell rang, and Rosa immediately seized the moment, fueled by the energy of the Texas crowd. She wasted no time, bouncing Thekla’s face off three consecutive turnbuckles to establish early dominance. The action quickly spilled to the outside, where Rosa climbed the barricade and launched herself onto the champion with a spectacular crossbody.
Back in the ring, Rosa continued her assault, planting Thekla on the top rope and connecting with a stiff kick to the back of her head. For a moment, it looked like the hometown heroine might be on the verge of a storybook victory.
However, champions are champions for a reason. Thekla weathered the storm and fired back, booting Rosa out of the ring to reset the tempo. The match settled into a grueling back-and-forth rhythm. Rosa connected with a low running dropkick and followed up with a powerful suplex, but Thekla kicked out, showing her resilience.
Thekla then retreated to the corner, hitting her signature spider pose taunt before leveling Rosa with a devastating spear. Showing a touch of arrogance, she lifted Rosa’s shoulders off the mat instead of going for an immediate pin, a decision that nearly cost her. Rosa dodged a subsequent stomp and hit her own finisher—the Thunder Fire driver—but Thekla somehow managed to kick out, keeping her championship hopes alive.
In the closing moments, Rosa went for a clothesline, but Thekla saw it coming. She ducked, connected with a second spear, and immediately followed up with a stomp. That was enough. The referee counted to three, and Thekla’s hand was raised in victory.
Aftermath: Statlander Storms the Ring
The match was over, but the drama was not. As Thekla looked to inflict further damage on the fallen challenger, a familiar figure stormed down the ramp.
Kris Statlander, former champion and the woman whose honor started this entire feud, hit the ring with bad intentions. She ran off the Triangle of Madness, forcing Thekla to retreat and preventing any post-match beatdown of Thunder Rosa.
Statlander stood tall in the ring, her eyes locked on the champion she never lost to. The message was clear: Thekla may have beaten Rosa, but the reckoning with Statlander is far from over.
What’s Next?
With AEW Revolution just around the corner on March 15, this victory solidifies Thekla’s status as a fighting champion. However, the image of Statlander clearing the ring and staring her down is a powerful one.
While Thunder Rosa gave an incredible account of herself, the focus now shifts to the inevitable collision between Thekla and the woman she dethroned. All signs point to a huge championship match at Revolution, and if this main event was any indication, the AEW women’s division is about to deliver something very special.
